In earlier times, the shopping districts were catering to the need of cities population. Now shopping malls have gained widespread popularity and patronization. The continuous promotional campaign through print, audio and visual media has brought tremendous change in people’s perception of concepts and products, resulting in changing shopping styles and preferences. Added to this is the phenomenon of people whether it is purchase of clothes jewelry, electronics or food and food products.
The competitive pricing, one stop shopping and availability of multiple choices, trade offers, discounts, financial options, make people travel to particular shopping to have best of options and bargains. This results in the shopping districts getting crowded.
When the movement of people to shopping districts, increase considerably it has its profound impact on the traffic. These shopping districts swell with customers during festival seasons. In any given city there may be several shopping districts. Some shopping districts may cater to a specific category of products like jewelry, textiles, electronics, hardware and groceries and so on.
With changing times, the malls are springing up in developing countries also. When all converge to the shopping district and malls there is always pressure on traffic flow as number of vehicles moving in and out of malls add to the existing traffic in a big way.
Wherever the shopping center is built, the crowded traffic environment is always there. The developers build a building without considering pedestrian areas and the traffic around it. Traffic jam and the society’s pattern of thinking are the main problem. Solutions are needed for these problems. Among other things that need attention are engineering and management of traffic, traffic regulations, and the regulations of shopping center development, socializing regulation enactment for public space users, improving the discipline of the society and public transport drivers and training that are to be imparted to the officials.
All Metropolitan cities cannot avoid the influence of industrial development, which produces consumer products that are mass-produced, on regional, national and international levels. When there are more than one million potential consumers, the place is perceived to be potential for the marketing of consumer goods. Therefore, in most densely areas, and attractive city centers shopping malls emerge as ultimate shopping propositions for maximum visibility and profitability.
The building of new shopping centers always creates problems dealing with the surroundings. Many street vendors appear in the scene, even if they are to illegally occupy some parts of the main street to conduct their business. The streets and road then present a sorrowful sight, much to the dismay of the public, the traffic planners and regulatory authorities.
The development of new shopping centers also always invites people from high, middle and low class society to come by using various kinds of means of transportation. The high-class society usually arrives in their private cars, the middle and low classes usually come by motorcycles or public transports such as taxi, mini vans and tricycles.
The road users use the public space as they like since there is not adequate and convenient place to drive and park the vehicles. The developers of shopping centers do not consider the needs of public, space for the pedestrians and road users. The issues mentioned above need special attention not only from the government but also from people. And particularly so because many problems are closely associated with the existence of shopping centers; problems of traffic jam, problems of crowding street vendors, problems of pedestrians and problems of heavy traffic
For the ardent shoppers, this new concept of shopping is very attractive because of the time, competitive pricing and convenience. The shoppers can do all shopping and fulfill their need for goods and services at the same place. Shoppers from big cities and neighborhoods are really attracted to these malls as it helps them save much time and energy during shopping. Therefore, big shopping malls are turning out to be a boon for the shopping public.
When shopping malls emerge the need for other putting in place proper infrastructure also becomes an immediate necessity. The need for well-integrated transportation, parking, communication, restaurants and rest rooms multiplies. Certain facilities need a central facility. In other words, the presence of a shopping center as a public facility enables creation of other facilities and activities around it.
Most of the people chose private vehicle to public transport for personal comfort, privacy and security. The demand for public transportation is also on the increase; but the means for providing adequate transportation network on time is limited. This increases traffic volumes manifold posing serious problem of traffic congestion and jam. This throws up a big challenge to authorities who are designated to control traffic. |
