Overloading of vehicles is the major threat to the safety of all other vehicles users. When a truck is loaded up to the capacity, it is very essential that its entire mechanical component is in good shape and does not suffer seriously from any wear and tear. The trunk designed to carry ten tons of load should carry only ten tons. If it is loaded with more than ten tons, then the vehicle is likely to breakdown. The reasons can be many. The tires may burst under increased air pressure, the suspension may give, the drive shaft may break and the chassis may get damaged and so on. If the load exceeds the prescribed limitations other weaknesses will surface affect the safety of the vehicle.

The engine is designed to carry prescribed load. If the vehicle is loaded in excess, in steep roads, it can’t move at a desired pace on steep stretches of road. It will also lead to breakdown and accidents. If the goods being carried are not fastened properly; it may also lead to accidents. The driver of the vehicle may be used to operating vehicle with optimal load and if the load exceeds limits he may lose control of the vehicle leading to accidents.

When the driver and the vehicle are under stress of different nature accidents are bound to happen, as maneuverability of the vehicle is greatly affected. The driver will not be able to handle even an emergency. It may be difficult to handle the steering

Loss control of steering and brakes may also fail if vehicles are overloaded. In some developed countries process of checking and ensuring that no vehicle extra loaded. In developing and under developed countries, full proof checking and prevention measures are not in place to the extent requirements.

This could be a big challenge to traffic controllers as over loaded vehicles get involved in several accidents and tend to breakdown often. When vehicles breakdown in high traffic prone areas they result in the free flow of traffic being affected and traffic jams being caused. And traffic jams in some locations can hold up traffic for hours throwing the city traffic into disarray.
