Cities with docks and ports are yet another challenge to traffic controllers. In these areas there is movement of heavy traffic comprising of heavy vehicles like trucks, trailers, container carriers, and heavy duty cranes moving materials in and out of the port. While the port activities are important commercially and economically the movement of vehicles associated with port activities is quiet phenomenal and often tricky and cumbersome.
Most of these trucks are driven by hired driver and these drivers normally are from economically backward sections of the community and they generally have no inclination for being part of a decent and organized group of drivers.
As the vehicles don’t belong to them, they don’t have a sense of ownership and consequently don’t care about minor and major damages that can happen to other vehicles on road. They are accustomed to driving big and powerful vehicles for long distances; with their journey spreading over day and night. As a consequence, they tend to drive rash and are often negligent. By their erratic and carefree driving they seldom refrain from posing a threat to other road users. The attitude of these drivers is feared by many other road users, who have small cars and motor bikes.
In the developed countries, movement of such trucks and trailers are organized in better fashion. But in the developing and under developed countries, the conditions on road are far from satisfactory, from safety point of view. The roads are crowded with vehicles. The atmosphere is strange and noisy. And there appears to be a sense of disharmony, huddle and muddle, amidst the din and dust.
In developing countries, the labor engaged in loading and unloading, the drivers and cleaners/ helpers tend to live close to areas of port. The attitude of these people shows up in the cars and other vehicles that move around in that zone. Since they are carefree and don’t own expensive cars they care a damn about the upkeep and shine of status cars on the road. People who venture to drive in those areas coming in from a relatively well organized traffic zones, need to be all the more careful, if they and their vehicles are to remain safe. It could be a daunting task to get in and get out of these areas.
There could be rash driving, there could be road rage and there could be violence. And any number of violations of traffic rules! |
