Bus terminals are inevitable and occupy a key position any cityscape. With increasing focus on promoting metropolitan rapid transport systems in place, be more and more bus terminals may emerge in cities. The old terminals which were designed decades ago may be insufficient and inadequate. They have not kept phase with growth of city or towns, with increase in population and increase in number of commuters. Though additional bus fleets have been added, there is no space for parking and regulation of the movement of these buses could pose a serious challenge. Added to these buses need to be parking overnight, serviced and maintained.
The commuters converge towards the bus terminals by coming either on foot or other modes of subsidiary transports like taxi, vans and buses and so on. The terminals may also vary in size and scope of activities based on whether they are terminals operating buses for intra city destination that may extend to a route distance of 50km or intercity destinations where buses may ply for very long distances and sometimes over 500Km.
In such instances buses from various destinations may fly in and out of such terminals. So in general, it is not uncommon to find autos, minivans, share auto who park near these terminals, which bring in and move out people to various destinations.
There are also other vendors who sell fruits, flowers, beverages, souvenirs to the travelers, who are also inclined to make last minute purchase of water, snacks, food and magazines to serve their requirements while travelling.
This makes the bus terminals area very busy. There is unruly parking, congestion and more violation of traffic rules. Generally the situation is chaotic, which affect the traffic moving in and out of terminals. It is challenging task to enforce the regulation round the clock.
In the case of inter-state bus terminals, where departure and arrivals are mostly in morning and in late evening hours, the traffic is intense at those times. When interstate and intra-state terminals are located side by side, the number of vehicles moving around the area increases doubly. The traffic police and regulating authorities are bound to face stiff challenges in ensuring accidents free atmosphere and smooth traffic flow at these locations where the vehicles are many and people and pedestrians are also too many. |
