Let Medians Mean Methodical traffic Flow! Medians are supposed to separate the road into two and facilitate the movement of vehicles in opposite direction. It is sometimes counter-productive; though the idea is to avoid collision of vehicles moving in opposite direction by providing clear space.
The medians however narrow down the small roads further and create traffic congestion and traffic pile-up. While the medians, are being built to prevent frequent collision and enable safe and organized movement of vehicles it has overlooked the interest of the pedestrians who do not choose to walk for long distances to cross the road. They tend to cross the road anyway by climbing or jumping over the medians; which has in effect become all the more dangerous.
Medians have also contributed to considerable slowing down of traffic in peak hours. In certain roads, erection of median has lead to more confusion and congestion then in the absence of it. It is common to find the roads on one side of median being free from traffic while the traffic on the other side of the median is highly congested.
Jaywalking compounded with median jumping has led to several traffic accidents. |
